We here at Virgil Naff's are aware that a number of shady dealerships and individual sellers will put used ATVs on the market in a less than stellar condition. At our dealership in Lynchburg, Virginia you’ll always find high-quality inventory at a great price! However, if you’re buying a used ATV from another party, or you’re worried about its quality, you can follow this short inspection guide to make sure your vehicle is up to snuff.

Tires

Checking the tires is a pretty simple process! Simply give them a good once over and ensure there are no punctures or signs of damage. You can give the wheels a good kick as well to ensure that the tire pressure is adequate. Take a close look at the tread to ensure it isn’t worn down. If you’re buying your ATV used, and there is some wear on the tires, confirm that it is even across the wheel. Uneven tread often signifies misaligned tires.

Fluids

If you notice a puddle under or around the used ATV try to confirm that it is not one of the machine's fluids leaking. Leaking fluids can also be identified if a machine has any damp or wet parts under the hood. Confirm that the coolant, oil, and brake fluids are all adequately filled. Much like you would a car, pull the ATVs dipstick to check that the oil is clean. You can also peer into your coolant reservoir to check that the liquid is clear and a bright green or orange. Lastly, take the lid off the gas canister and check that it doesn’t have an odd smell.

Undercarriage

Peer up at the ATV’s frame from below to look for cracks or bends- as this is often the result of a crash. You’ll also need to confirm that the axles are straight and in one piece. CV Boots that have been damaged will often have visible cracks and will need to be replaced. Lastly, check your shocks for wet areas. If your fingers come back covered in oil, you have a leak. You’ll also want to give the front of your used ATV a good push downward. If the vehicle bounces up more than once, your shocks will need to be recalibrated.

We hope this short list of inspection checks will be helpful to you as you shop for your used ATV. At Virgil Naff's we have some of the highest quality inventory around! We hope that if you’re located in the nearby cities of Roanoke or Charlottesville, Virginia, that you’ll stop by our dealership.
